Swiss Post presents innovative newspaper concept ‘MyNewspaper’ produced on the Océ JetStream 1000
Venlo, The Netherlands, 11 October 2011 – Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, today announced that Swiss Post, the largest Swiss logistics company, will implement a new concept for personalized newspapers at the end of November 2011. Under the title MyNewspaper, the issues will be produced on an Océ JetStream® 1000 by Swiss Post Solutions AG, a subsidiary of Swiss Post.
First customer-individualized newspaper in Switzerland
MyNewspaper is the first customer-individualized newspaper in Switzerland. In a pilot project, Swiss Post investigated both the demand for, and the technical feasibility of, a personalized daily newspaper. The results showed that the realization of such a newspaper is feasible both from a technical and content perspective.
From November 2011 on, a one-year market pilot will allow the commercial viability of a printed personalized newspaper to be analyzed in detail, and, if successful, final implementation to be carried out.
New distribution channel for publishers
Swiss Post is in this way responding to a real customer need and is opening up a new distribution channel for publishers. The target groups for MyNewspaper include several hundred thousand readers from Germany who live and work in Switzerland.
Swiss Post is also one of the leading logistics companies for the distribution of newspapers both within and outside Switzerland. For the distribution of MyNewspaper, Swiss Post can therefore utilize its own national and international distribution channels.
Optimally tailored production on Océ JetStream 1000
The personalized newspapers will be produced on an Océ JetStream 1000 at Swiss Post Solutions AG, a Swiss Post subsidiary. Swiss Post Solutions has been operating the Océ JetStream 1000 since the middle of 2010, mainly for transaction and TransPromo applications in day shift operation. MyNewspaper now permits additional capacity utilization of the system during the night shift.
Océ supports the concept of the personalized newspaper and holds several international patents in this area. Sebastian Landesberger, Executive Vice President, Océ Production Printing, notes: “Océ patented the concept for personalized newspapers and founded the Digital Newspaper Network®. As the partner of Swiss Post Solutions AG, Océ is once again a pioneer in the digital newspaper market.”
With the Océ JetStream series, Océ offers a product family that, in its quality, performance and costs, is optimally tailored for the digitally-printed newspaper market. Over 1,000 36-page tabloid newspapers per hour can be printed in high quality and in full color on original newsprint on the Océ JetStream 1000.
For Roland Glauser, MyNewspaper Project Manager at Swiss Post, the Océ JetStream 1000 is “the optimal product for implementing the personalized newspaper concept. The many years of experience possessed by Océ in the printing of fully variable data considerably simplified implementation of the project. Océ is for us the ideal partner for the implementation of this innovative project over the long term.”
